Thu, 28 Aug '08 - JR office

After colllecting our luggage we head into the belly of the airport to seek out the Japan Rail office.

Here we meet a lovely uniformed Japanese lady that, thankfully, offers a calm port of perfect English amidst the swelling storm of kanji and katakana. During the short trip through the airport it has become readily apparent that the further we move from the plane the more incomprehensible Japan will become.

The lady issues us with a rail pass each and looks relieved when we offer her our printed itinerary. I can only assume itineraries are standard issue for the Japanese.

We explain our journey as she scans our printout, takes notes, circles some times on a timetable and then vanishes behind a screen. Moments later she returns with a smile and a stack of tickets.

All our train journeys for the week are booked with forward facing seats and perfect connection times in less than five minutes, leaving us five minutes to get downstairs and use the first of our tickets.

Narita to Tokyo.

Stunning service and efficiency seems the norm here, and it's just what this pair of weary Gaijins need…

Thought
No matter how big or small the task at hand it is the norm for people to take great pride in what they do. The result of this is a 'system' that just works. There is no need for excuses.

It's like they start at perfect and then make it better. If your minimum expectations are raised to the level of perfection, does this mean you then focus on 'higher' thoughts, such as how to refine the minutiae or even find the spiritual aspect of a daily routine.
